Michale Brearley will give the next talk in the London series on philosophy and sport at 5.45 on Friday, 3 February. His talk is called, 'Rivalry and Cooperation in Sport'. Please note a change of venue: this talk will be in the Archaeology Lecture Theatre, Archaeology Building, on the corner of Gordon Square and Endsleigh Place.

Is there still life in Still Life? -- Anthony Savile

Attacks on the value of painting that stem from neo-platonic thought are at their most pressing in respect of still life painting. One of the most vigorous opponents of that dismissive criticism was Schopenhauer, who took the greatest value of painting to lie in its ability to present to the eye true Platonic Ideas. In my talk I shall ask how far we need to depart from that response of Schopenhauer's to understand why we should expect still life painting of our own time to be anything but still-born.
