A Metaphysics of Ordinary Things -- Lynne Rudder Baker

Posted in Philosophy on 17/11/2009 - 14:58

Are ordinary things like walnuts as ontologically significant as particles?  Lynne  Rudder Baker thinks so and makes a case for this view in 'A Metaphysics of Ordinary Things and Why We Need It'

She argues that the differences between ordinary things really are ontological -- a screwdriver is a fundamentally different kind of thing than a walnut.  She claims that if you give an inventory of the universe which just mentions particles, not walnuts and the like, your list is incomplete.
