Ethics and the Bible -- James Rachels

Posted in Think on 21/06/2010 - 12:27

To what extent can we rely on what the Bible has to say about morality?

Many try to justify their moral positions  -- whether on murder, infanticide, homosexuality or abortion -- by appealing to the Bible, but to what extent can we rely on what the Bible says about morality?  In this paper from a recent issue of THINK, James Rachels raises questions about the legitimacy of such Biblical justifications.

MORALITY

I dont think people can rely purely on the Bible when looking for the foundations of morality for that would would make morality a religious attribute. Morality must exist in this world apart from religion, because even an atheist has the capacity to recognise when an action is morally right or wrong. The Bible has several inconsistencies and makes many contradictions and therefore its' legitimacy of teachings can hardly be followed whole heartedly.
