Is there still life in Still Life? -- Anthony Savile

Attacks on the value of painting that stem from neo-platonic thought are at their most pressing in respect of still life painting. One of the most vigorous opponents of that dismissive criticism was Schopenhauer, who took the greatest value of painting to lie in its ability to present to the eye true Platonic Ideas. In my talk I shall ask how far we need to depart from that response of Schopenhauer's to understand why we should expect still life painting of our own time to be anything but still-born.
